The one she gave was that I wasn't strong enough (and she may have been right).īut it made me think of how we will often refuse offers of help or let others take our burdens. I asked my Ethiopian friend to ask her if I could help carry her load. She had to stop for a rest in the side of the road in the ditch and we were passing her. She was walking the several kilometers into town where she would try to sell the wood for the equivalent of 50 cents to $1. She was probably 5' 1", 90 lbs and the bundle on her back had to have weighed at least 150 lbs. On the way down, I saw one old bent over woman walking in front of me carrying an unimaginable bundle of wood on her back. On the way up and down, we saw donkeys and women (mostly widows) carrying tremendous burdens of sticks and wood on their back. Entoto to see a historic church, palace and park.
